with a file , but "mushrooming" in the repaired area is also a

I thought the abrasion and galling resistance of stainless was worse than carbon steel. Since I don't have the equipment to measure the hardness of worn small parts or shop-made substitutes I try to replace them. My Scleroscope clearly doesn't read correctly on small pieces like HSS lathe bits, even if clamped in the milling vise. It seems right on large ones.
