Again the UN -- Russian being one of the official languages -- originally on 12 November (why?). But changed (when? why?) to 6 June which is...Pushkin's birthday!
Crystal on Pushkin:
---
A line from his poem "Sleeplessnes" has achieved a wide online presence in this translation: "I want to understand you, I study your obscure language". Its impact has gone well beyond the context of the original poem, turning up in settings as diverse as personal relationships and endangered languages.
---
Well, it's a language-related point. I thought I ought to quote the original, so it's here:
https://russianlegacy.com/poetry-pushkin-insomnia
Full title of the poem:
Стихи, сочиненные ночью во время бессонницы...
[Verses composed at night in a time of sleeplessness]
and the last two lines are:
Я понять тебя хочу,
Смысла я в тебе ищу...
[I want to understand you,
I search for meaning in you...]
So nothing about "obscure language", alas.
