The musical instrument known in English as a "bassoon" is known as "fagot"
in French and "faggot" in German. That is based on "bundle of rods".

Minor correction: The spelling is with one -g- in all languages I found
where the word has this root. Some languages have one -t-, some have two.
In German, it is spelt "Fagott".

Just to make a difference to "faggot".
