It's the feast day of St.Jerome, who's the patron not only of translators and interpreters, but also "Bible scholars, archivists, librarians, military linguists [?], encyclopedists and students." (Crystal)
Jerome's translations made up the standard Latin text of the Bible (the Vulgate).
The UN has a St Jerome Translation Contest (2005-), for "the best translations into Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish and German".
