American linguist (yes, a linguist!), born 1927.
I'm sure I wrote a bit about him in the Linguistic Birthdays series (2018), but can't retrieve it now.
He was involved in many different subject areas, but is best remembered for: - study of Chinookan languages;
- "ethnopoetics" (especially of Native American cultures)
- "linguistic anthropology", "ethnography of speaking"
The last is how he defined his own approach, starting with the social context in which speaking takes place (something most descriptive linguists either ignored altogether or treated as marginal).
Crystal mentions his "S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G" acronym (no, not really an acronym?-- sort of an acrostic mnemonic?) -- things to pay attention to when studying speaking:
