This day in 1946, the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund was founded. It became a permanent agency of the UN in 1953.
Possibly it was at this point that they dropped the words "International" and "Emergency", while keeping the nicely pronounceable acronym. I guess "International" is redundant in the context of the UN; and "Emergency" is incompatible with "permanent" -- or is it that we are in a permanent state of emergency? And why keep "International" in the name of the Day?
