That's what happens when one group clings to power anyhow. Democracy
means letting go, let another set of snouts in the trough have their
day. Alternative to civil war and dictatorship, is democracy. Works
so-so, nothing like having a great genius as pharaoh/Maharana/emperor
for rapid progress. But it is peaceful, at least, so far as change of
power is concerned. More dignified, too. Recent scenes in Bangladesh
have been appalling.
