I've had this question for a few years. I thought somebody who's from India can answer that but the only Indian we have in this forum is the equivalent of a buffoon to answer such questions.
Today I took a glimpse at the reason. I read in a telegram channel that Dehli's AQI today was 432!... There was a picture of the highways there also, in which one could not see more than 20 meteres ahead. Air is packed with pollution and smoke.
I don't go walking when AQI (air quality index) is over 60. I consider it overal harmful if I do. In this area in Texas the AQI can get as high as 90, and that keeps people who want to walk or run or even go out for errands at home. It happens on a few rare days in the Summer.
But Dehli's people are living inside 432 AQI, home or outside... I think the answer to my question should have to do with this fact.
Tehran is one of the most polluted cities in the world. From the balcony of our house in extreme north of Tehran, which was (now there are high rise apartment buildings there) on the slopes of Alborz one could see way beyond the southern end of Tehran and Rey, easily even the mountains just north of Saveh. This was so when I was a kid. Tehran in those years had good air all year long.
Then in my teens Tehran's pollution as a problem was born and when it would get very bad we could only see the northern parts of Tehran. The middle and southern parts were blocked by smog. This happened on many days durimg Summer.
Right before I came here, Tehran's smog was there year long. There were no exception day left. We could only see the northern parts and that was it. I thought that was the worst case of pollution that I had ever experienced.
But today's picture from Dehli shows a scene from Hell. I just checked to see what a 432 AQI means for health. This is what I got from internet:
"301–500 AQI: Hazardous – Health warnings of emergency conditions. The entire population is likely to be affected."
So if you're _living_ under such conditions, and not just experiencing it once or twice a year, then this must be why young Indians drop dead of heart attack.
Come to think of it, this might even explain the behavior of the resident Indian guy in this forum. I bet it has consequences on one's IQ as well.
