Simple reason.

What do you suggest?
Should we use "electocracy" instead of "democracy"?

Implying no (significant+) difference between ancient Greek democracy
[in a city (a small state)], direct Swiss democracy and typical western
parliamentary "electocracy" would be brave/stupid.

BTW Population of Swiss Confederation is 9 million.
IMHO It implies current upper limit on effective direct democracy.
