I disagree. The south thought Lincoln was going to end slavery, but that was not his expressed objective. Did you read the letter I referenced?

Your assumption that the South would only secede in response to a belief that slavery would be abolished in Lincoln's term, and not in response to the prospect of restrictions on slavery and steps towards ending it in the future requires examination.
