Yah. The alt-right became the mainstream right in part because they knew how to use social media to multiply their influence and give themselves a disproportionate appearance of numbers and power.
Most folks who WEREN'T internet nazis enabled them by failing to recognize their tactics and the intended impact. For example, "Just ignore the trolls" is effective when the trolls are only seeking attention, but it doesn't work when trolls are attempting to disrupt a space, shift the political center of that space, or normalize toxic ideas. "Ignore the trolls" is a big chunk of how open racism and eliminationist policies became acceptable again.
The internet creationism phenomenon was, in many ways, a prototype for the alt-right. In 1999 I wondered if maybe we all took internet nutbars too seriously; 25 years later, I know we didn't take them seriously enough.
