https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/avian-influenza-bird-flu/hawaii-reports-first-avian-flu-outbreak-poultry-surge-continues-californiaA backyard poultry flock in Hawaii was infected with H5, but they think that it was brought in by birds using the West Pacific flyway migration route. Some birds fly from Alaska down into the Pacific Islands. They need to sequence it to make sure that it is the wild bird H5N1. This is the first time Hawaii has been infected. Infected birds likely die before they get to Hawaii. Birds dead due to the Dairy virus are usually found on the dairies, and I do not know of any that have been found very far from an infected dairy. They seem to die very soon after being infected.
The CIDRAP article claims that 41 more dairy farms have been confirmed since last Friday so the number of infected California herds is now 335 herds (61% of the total) with 549 total herds in the US (the other states never did contact tracing and testing like California).
