https://www.science.org/content/article/science-editors-pick-their-most-memorable-stories-yearOne of the articles is about vaults. Thousands of these complex structures composed of protein and RNA are in our cells, but they do not know what they do. They were first discovered in 1986, but most cellular biologists likely do not even know that they exist. No function has ever been found for these highly conserved complex structures 3 times larger than ribosomes. In mice you can knock out the RNA, and major protein components and nothing happens, but these things have likely been conserved since the origin of eukaryotes, but some eukaryotic lineages have lost them.
It is a real mystery of science.
