I do not recall measles parties ever being common.  Measles was known to kill children in the 1960's.  Google indicates that 500 to 600 chiildren would die in the United States every year before vaccination started. The firt measles death in the current outbreak was an unvaccinated child.  What I recall is that chicken pox parties were common when I was a kid in the 1960's.
