Some New York cats died of avian influenza, and the cat food that they had eaten was made in California. It tested positive for H5N1, but they aren't saying if it is the dairy virus or not. It might be that the chicken in the pet food had been infected, and sold for processing before symptoms were noticed. It is hard not to miss an infected flock because the birds die within a few days of being infected. It was confirmed to be H5N1 at both Cornell and the USDA, but they are not saying what genotype. Poultry farms in California are being infected by the dairy virus (genotype B3.13).
Another Dairy herd in Idaho was confirmed to be positive last week. They still are not releasing the genotype of the virus infecting the most recent dairy herds, since Nevada and Arizona herds had been confirmed to have been infected by genotype D1.1 at the end of Feb.
