That would be something set on your newsreader or your feed. I certainly have
never seen that here. there are currently 98648 posts available on t.o on my
feed going back to January of 2019.
 

Well, I exaggerated a wee bit, but if I unsubscribe and start over
asking for everything I get stuff for 2003.  I don't recognize any of
the turkeys that show up, unlike the more recent turkeys (including
myself, of course).

You newsreader is simply doing what you asked it to do. My experience
is newsreaders first dl only headers.  When you unsubscribed, you
deleted the headers for that froup.  Downloading headers is quick.
Downloading post bodies are an optional second step.  That way you can
control which turkeys' headers get stuffed.
