talk.origin constantly reminds me to download all the ~510^6 posts from
the last twenty years. Is there any way to turn this off?

That would be something set on your newsreader or your feed. I certainly have
never seen that here. there are currently 98648 posts available on t.o on my
feed going back to January of 2019.

Well, I exaggerated a wee bit, but if I unsubscribe and start over asking for everything I get stuff for 2003.  I don't recognize any of the turkeys that show up, unlike the more recent turkeys (including myself, of course).

Nyikos had, had to retire from posting a couple years before that, and didn't start posting again until the end of 2010.  Scientific creationism was on the way out and even though the ID bait and switch scam had started in March 2002 the creationist ID scam was becoming the major topic of discussion on TO.  There were still creationists promoting the failed scientific creationist junk, like Madman, but IDiots that kept supporting the ID scam even after the ID perps had started running the bait and switch, and absolutely no one was ever going to get any ID science to teach in the public schools, were taking over the anti-evolution creationist side.  We were still getting claims from the ID perps that the Santorum amendment supported teaching the IDiocy in the public schools, and as something to claim legitimacy for the IDiotic creation science.  IDiots like Pitman became the major voices of anti-science creationism on TO.  Glenn was posting at that time, but by 2003 Glenn had pretty much given up on trying to support his Biblical beliefs, and Glenn's posts were pretty much what they were when the ID scam pretty much died on TO around 2018 (mostly one liner denial statements).  Mark Elkington was posting back then, but at that time he seemed to understand what a scam ID was, and his posts were more like those of an amused observer of the ridiculous creationist antics.
Back then the IDiots tried to defend the "ID science" even though none of them seemed to know what the ID perps were claiming to have.  IDiots like Pitman would just keep claiming that the science was on his web page, but he could never tell anyone where on the page, nor what the ID science was.  It was like Glenn's use of the ID perp's educator's briefing packet.  Glenn was the first IDiot to post that junk on TO after it was put out by the ID perps in 2007.  The ID perps claimed that they had a scientific theory of ID to teach in the public schools, that the federal judges decision was wrong, and that ID could still be taught in the public schools after their loss in Kitzmiller 2005.  It was the Discovery Institute's propaganda to continue to run the ID bait and switch scam after the failure of the ID scam in the federal courts. Glenn would claim that propaganda as proving that the ID science existed, but he could never point out what the ID science was, and where it could be found in that document or anywhere else.  Glenn was doing that when Nyikos returned, but Nyikos could not accept that the ID perps were claiming to be able to teach the junk in the public schools, and had to start his denial stupidity about the briefing packet.  Glenn never bothered to correct Nyikos' opinion, but kept putting the briefing packet up as evidence that the ID science existed to teach in the public schools for several more years.
Back in 2003 there were still IDiotic and Biblical literalist creationists willing to try to support the nonsense.  Unlike today when all the IDiots have died or abandoned the creationist ID scam.  MarkE (probably Elkington) isn't supporting the ID scam, just the god-of-the-gaps denial that the Scientific creationists used to use, and that turned out to be all that the ID perps ever had going for the cause.
