They were not aquatic, but they lived in the lowlands created by the glacial period of 140,000 years ago when the regions between islands were dry land.  It looks like they ate sea turtles, but mostly "bovids", probably, something like water buffalo.  During this period they were killing more large game, and they claim that since earlier Homo erectus did not on these islands, that they may have had contact with mainland H. erectus and learned the hunting techniques from them.
