I think that many of these priestly records are similar to the Anglo-Saxon chronicle, also kept by priests (or at least monks).
The AS is reliable in many ways, but it does include biases.  If a given king had good relations with the church, he is praised to the skies and never loses a battle.  If he has bad relations his character is blackened and he never wins a battle.
In the Old Testament the story of Ahab and his son would be a similar case.
