Even moderately high temperatures impair mental ability.
Noone in Florida can add or take percentages, for instance.
Some simple data is here.
States like: Av temp(C) SAT lit Model predicts
Minnesota 5.131940 601 604.349
Wyoming 5.716930 604 601.316
Montana 6.045050 607 599.615
Wisconsin 6.567140 615 596.908
South.Dakota 7.215800 549 593.544*
Utah 8.876250 597 584.935
Pennsylvania 9.948420 560.5 579.376
Virginia 12.479700 561.333 566.251
Missouri 12.772600 603 564.732*
Tennessee 14.607600 576 555.217
Oklahoma 15.371400 528 551.257*
South.Carolina 17.186500 527 541.846
Georgia 17.613100 565.5 539.634*
Florida 21.717000 503 518.355
T-test: P(beta<0.000000) = 0.999404
Rank test: calculated Spearman corr = -0.705495 (cv .645 at 1% sig)
i.e. 99% likely the 2 things show a real link.
R2 = 60%
Same for SAT math.
Unusually the pct of studentsd TAKING the SATs are higher in warmer states.
They are just itching to leave it seems.
Stands to reason. We have seen many many times that warmer US states
have poorer health and lower life expectancy even adjusting
for age (i.e. warmer states generally have
more retired people with shorter lifex --
we take that into account when comoaring).
So the stereotype of the cold Svedsker or Iclandic living a long
and healthy life is not just a stereotype planted by the Scandinavian
PR firms.
Obviously if its true for warmer states now, it will be truer for
warmer states when 100F is the norm.
-- Scientists Say People In Colder Climates May Live LongerCowboy State Daily, 6 Feb 2023Science has proven that cold temperatures can prolong the life of cells. This refrigerator effect helps to slow the aging process, scientists say, while also killing off dangerous insects and bacteria that may
otherwise survive in warmer climates.
Every year spent in school or university improves life expectancy, study says
