The first one, a good mile across, passed well away
from Earth. Radar imaging revealed a fascinating
detail however - the thing has its own "moon" that
orbits a couple of miles away. Tiny, but still an
orbiting body.

The second rock came much closer, indeed crossing
the orbit of our moon. It was "only" 500 feet across,
a solid 100+ megaton hit if the direction had been
even the tiniest bit different. Being closer they
got GOOD radar images ... "roughly" round, but with
a lot of angular bits.

In any case, these two big rock in just a few days
shows that our neighborhood is NOT safe. Even the
little one would have taken out NYC and parts of
Jersey. Might have been mistaken for a nuclear
attack ...

So - we HAVE to start doing a much better job of
finding these things EARLY enough so, if needed,
we can intervene. The sooner you can bump 'em
the better. For the first time in human history
we actually have the MEANS to change our fate
in this respect - so let's not blow it.

Oh, the BAD one - Apophis - it's gonna come very
near very soon. NEXT time around, just 7 years,
it is very likely to hit us square on. It's
big enough to ruin a half a continent. Say ...
when it comes around MAYBE we should attach a
nuclear booster or something to notably change
its orbit so there WON'T be a problem 7 years
late ? With 7 years for the nudge to take effect
it could be WELL out of our way foreverafter.

Just sayin' ...

Putin, of all people, HAS been interested in
asteroid defense - but everybody ignored him.
Russia still has lots of very big bombs, but
it might take Musk's Starship to take several
to the right spot on or near Apophis.

Tick, tick, tick .............*
I thought that Apophis was most likely not going to hit us, there was
just a quite small chance it could. You're saying very likely, where
did you get that from?
