I've seen a lot of references to Jimmy Carter being a terrible
president.  Can someone explain for us Australians, why that is so?

This is a right-wing talking point. Carter was a very moral man, so he
didn't play the political games as well as others, but he oversaw a
period of high inflation, high unemployment, and slowed growth, and the
buck always stops with the President.

But probably the biggest thing the right wing complains about was the
Iranian hostage crisis.

The kicker, though, is that we have since learned from Reagan insiders
that they made a deal (illegal of course) to delay the hostage release
until after the election. Carter was therefore seen as weak, and lost
the election.

OK, I did know about the hostage crisis (it was before my time).  I'm
pretty sure you've had worse presidents since then ;)
