"would-be assassin."RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A woman is accused of shooting two attorneys outside the Wake County Courthouse late Friday morning following a case they were all involved in, officials said.
According to the Raleigh Police Department, officers and Wake County deputies responded to a shooting just after 10:30 a.m. in the 300 block of Fayetteville Street near the Wake County Courthouse. They found a woman with a handgun and took her into custody.
Police identified the woman as 57-year-old Gwendolyn White. She is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder.
Officers located two victims with gunshot wounds. Both were taken to the hospital, according to Raleigh police, although their conditions remain unknown.
A warrant filed by Raleigh police identifies the victims as attorneys Jeffrey Whitley and Mary Harris of the Fox Rothschild law firm.
Police said the shooting resulted from a case in the courthouse that involved White and both victims. During the hearing, White became “belligerent.”
After the case ended, according to Raleigh police, White allegedly went to her car, grabbed a gun and returned to shoot the victims as they exited the courthouse.
Town officials, law firm issue statements after shooting
According to the Town of Rolesville, Whitley and Harris were representing Rolesville in a civil case at the time of the shooting.
“We are saddened to learn that two attorneys representing the Town of Rolesville in a civil matter were shot outside the Wake County Courthouse this morning,” the town said in a statement. “Fox Rothschild has represented the Town of Rolesville for decades and while they are not employees of the town, this incident is deeply disturbing.
“We are thankful to the first responders who provided life-saving care and apprehended a suspect,” the statement continues. “Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”
Managing partner with Fox Rothschild, Todd A. Rodriguez, provided a statement to CBS 17.
“First and foremost, our thoughts are with our colleagues and their loved ones. We are doing everything possible to support them. We are grateful to the first responders and courthouse personnel who acted quickly to come to their aid.
“We cannot adequately express our deep sadness and concern. The safety and well-being of our people is our highest priority.
“We are closely monitoring the situation, and our leadership team traveled to our Raleigh office today to provide on-the-ground support.”
More on the civil case
According to court documents, the civil case White was in court for on Friday dates back to 2022. It began with a request she made to have body-worn camera footage released by the Rolesville Police Department from a situation in 2021.
Tanara Gilbert said she was inside the courtroom when she heard the start of the chaos outside.
“You heard the yelling; I guess she was fussing with them arguing and then just really quickly you heard rapid shots,” Gilbert said.
Moments after the shooting, White was in custody.

“They had handcuffed her and they were walking her over,” Gilbert said.
A criminal case begins
According to officials, the Wake County Courthouse closed at 1 p.m. for employees and the public following the shooting. It is not expected to reopen until next Tuesday, May 26, due to the observance of Memorial Day on Monday.
According to records, White was not given bond. She is scheduled to have a hearing on the charges against her on May 26.
The incident remains under investigation by the Raleigh Police Department and the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.
