Bailly et les maths

Selon Bailly, κυϐόκυϐος signifie /cube du cube/, i.e. (x³)³ = x^9. Pour Pape et LSJ, il s'agit d'un /cube multiplié par un cube/, i.e. x³·x³ = x⁶. Cf. Hippol. Haer. 1.2.10 ἡ τῶν γινομένων (ἀριθμῶν) γένεσις … μονάδα, δύναμιν, κύϐον, δυναμοδύναμιν, δυναμόκυϐον, κυϐόκυϐον x, x², x³, x⁴, x⁵, x⁶. Cf. Sch. Dioph. 116 οἷον κύϐος ὁ ηʹ ἐφ' ἑαυτὸν ποιήσει τὸν ξδʹ κυϐόκυϐον 8 [2³] * 8 [2³] = 64 [2⁶].
Ce n'est pas la seule erreur de Bailly dans le domaine des maths.
Grand philologue, il n'est pas très fort en sciences, techniques (notamment de la vigne), archéologie.
Beaucoup d'erreurs de ce genre ont été corrigées dans le Bailly2020, voir
