There's Free Agent. It's crippled, but free... if you can find it. Their
website forteinc.com is down atm and support isn't reacting. Internal
newsgroups forte.* have been down for ages. Chances are they're out of
business and there are users posting license keys on
alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent, so it's basically free.

Thanks. I'll stick with what I know.
microplanet gravity works fine on all common versions of windows (xp to 11)
and is easy to setup and use; same goes for mesnews, and more full-featured
40tude dialog; free agent is only very basic with minimal features but it's
the first newsreader i ever used (along with nfilter/newsproxy for scoring) . . .
Forte Free Agent v1.93/32.576 (2002):
https://web.archive.org/web/20060807005839/ftp://ftp3.forteinc.com/pub/agent/english/a32en193.exe
i still use free agent for posting plain text articles to usenet newsgroups,
but for reading/downloading from nntp newsservers, 40tude dialog works best
