i've tested and used many other newsreaders since Windows 95

post; it does appear to work normally afaict, since i can
connect to "localhost" and also to several other popular
newsservers which all appear to connect & download group
lists, headers, and articles as expected;

"dormant" group is revived in newsgroup properties, user
preferences, by changing get messages action from "none" to
"get all new messages", check "get headers only" to avoid
downloading unwanted message bodies; "quick get messages"
appears to be only manual by pressing "g" or "q", although
macros could be programmed to assist with automating process
(if XanaNews can be setup for timed activity, i didn't see it
listed); i haven't tested filtering or scoring yet, but this
newsreader works well enough to invite further experimentation
. . . i'll post results as time permits (hopefully, it will
allow scoring on message headers).
FWIW I use XanaNews and have done for years. It's simple and
effective and works perfectly well for what I need it to do...
i.e. read messages on Usenet.
YMMV.
