Claws Mail client has gotten increasingly buggy over time on Linux.
Now it crashes often. It especially crashes when accessing pop and
nntp over a Tor proxy. The way it interfaces with the gnu nntp
library causes it to crash a lot. This newsreader has become
aggravating to use. It is almost like someone put the bug there on
purpose to discourage Tor usage.

Please open bug reports for that in the Claws Mail tracker.
IIRC one of the crashes is related to libetpan which is built with the
wrong options:

Looking through their copious bug reports on this issue, it appears they have been aware of the issue for several years. One more bug report on the same issue is not going to change anything.
The last thing I am going to do is jump through hoops, devote time to setting up debug and logging environment, only to have my efforts ignored, or to be told that they can't replicate the bugs on their end.
Some things just aren't worth the hassle. If they don't want people using Tor, this is their way of saying so.

may not be deliberate "anti-tor" behavior, but agree that bug reports
also may not be taken seriously if their systems are not experiencing
similar problems . . . recommend testing other newsreaders with linux

seems ironic that the majority of popular free usenet newsservers are
tor-friendly, including the popular novabbs "rocksolid-light" website:
