I used a Usenet newsreader on my android and gave up a long while ago.
I'm having another try and find Phonews very good, except I cannot post
from the free version. Are there any better options now?

I have tried a lot of them, too, and have found HotdogEd to be
absolutely the best -- actually a usable newsreader for the smaprtphone.
Unfortuntaly, the author has stopped woking on it, but its last version
is backed up here:  <https://fidonet.fi/pub/hotdoged/> . There is also
an on-going effort at reverse-engineering:

HotdogEd comprises a client program, FidoNet provider, and an NNTP
provider.  In order for it to work, make sure to disable /all/
enegry-saving options that might kill the providers working in the
background (non-sleeping apps, &c).  With the correct settings, the
latest original version is known to work on modern Androids.  For
support, refer to the HOTDOGED FidoNet echo, which can be accessed via
an NNTP gateway, such as the abovementioned <https://fidonet.fi> .
