Pointing out (in whatever way) to stay on the argument is fine.

In todays day and world, it is not very difficult to look up phrases such as ad hominem. I do it from time to time. I learn something by doing that, and should thank the other person for bringing it to my attention.
Then, the next time I encounter it, I do not have to look it up again.
