The Open Invention Network was founded by a bunch of companies,
including some big ones, fed up with continual attacks on Open Source
software from patent trolls. Not only did they agree to cross-licence
all their relevant patents royalty-free, but they also collect
information useful in defending against patent lawsuits, such as
details of prior art that should render those patents invalid.
And in 2018, Microsoft shocked the world by doing a complete 180° from
its old “Linux is a cancer” FUD compaign, by joining the OIN and
adding its entire portfolio of 60,000 patents to the royalty-free
cross-licensing pool.
