  We've lost the war with Russia, is the bottom line.  Ukraine bravely
fought it for us but it hasn't worked.  We have to satisfy Putin, fair
as it may not seem.

No, we've not lost the war with Russia.  We've barely tried, and we've been grossly delinquent in living up to the security promises we made to Ukraine.  If you really want to "end it", then we're obligated to give back to Ukraine their bombers and nukes.  Pragmatically, the peace bringing force-equalizer would be for Russia to fear Moscow being nuked.
