 OK, I tried a test program that invokes QueryDosDeviceW() on L"C:".
The result was "\Device\HarddiskVolume4".  (That's not a C string
literal.  It contains two single backslash characters.)
 What can I do with that string?

You can use it in CreateFile. In fact there are cases when you should. I remotely remember a problem determining if the file is same and opening it. It failed miserably on letters created by the SUBST command.
