For finite sets cardinality is a meaningful notion expressing the number of elements.
For infinite sets it is a "generalisation" of the notion "number of elements".
Hint: "In mathematics, the cardinality of a set is the number of its elements. The cardinality of a set may also be called its size, when no confusion with other notions of size is possible. Beginning in the late 19th century, this concept of size was generalized to infinite sets, allowing one to distinguish between different types of infinity and to perform arithmetic on them."
