Good - means: optimized. Science is solving
the puzzle of optimized set of axioms and
definitions. Or rather - axioms including
its special form - definitions.

Well, maybe there is a purpose maybe not.
This is a difficult question, but not really for physics.
I would say, that 'purpose' would fall into the realm of philosophy.
