Posting Server Details
The Posting Server Details section controls which servers XanaNews uses to
post messages and reply by e-mail.
Post Messages Using Account
People almost always want to post messages to the same server as they read
them from. However under rare circumstances you may want to ensure that
your postings go to a separate server.
The default settings is 'This Account' which ensure that the same server is
used to send and receive messages.
Reply by Mail using Mail Account
XanaNews may be able to use your existing e-mail application (Outlook,
Mozilla Thunderbird, etc.) when its asked to reply by mail. However, many
e-mail clients don't support this feature. In this case, XanaNews can use
it's own e-mailer, using Mail Accounts

XanaNews > Help > Contents > Working with XanaNews > Derived Settings
Derived Settings
Account Derived Settings override the Default Settings that have been set
globally in Tools/Options. They can be overridden themselves, per newsgroup
in Newsgroup Properties.

XanaNews > Help > Contents > Working with XanaNews > Subscribing to
Newsgroups
Subscribing to Newsgroups
Subscribing to a newsgroup tells XanaNews that you intend to download and
read the messages in that group. Once you subscribe to a group, it appears
in the Subscribed groups tree. You can select the group there and download
new messages and display already downloaded messages.
Once messages have been downloaded they are stored on your computer until
you delete them, either indivudyally, or en masse using the Messagebase
Management functions.
To subscribe to a newsgroup, show the account's newsgroup list and
subscribe there.
Note that subscribing to a newsgroup is something that happens entirely on
your computer. The server doesn't know or care which groups you are
subscribed to.

XanaNews > Help > Contents > Working with XanaNews > Unsubscribing from
Newsgroups
Unsubscribing from Newsgroups
The quickest way to unsubscribe from a newsgroup is to select it in the
Subscribed Groups tree, and select 'Unsubscribe' from the Newsgroup menu.
If you select more than one group on the Subscribed Groups tree, XanaNews
will unsubscribe from each group in turn.
Alternatively you can display the list of newsgroups for the account, and
unsubscribe there.
When you unsubscribe from a newsgroup, all the messages for that newsgroup
will be deleted from your computer.

XanaNews > Help > Contents > Working with XanaNews > Newsgroup Properties
Newsgroup Properties
Newsgroup Properties allows you to control aspects of a newsgroup's
operation. There are two sections - Basic Settings and Derived Settings.

XanaNews > Help > Contents > Working with XanaNews > Mail Accounts
Mail Accounts
By default when you send an e-mail message using the 'Reply by Mail'
function, XanaNews attempts to control your regular E-Mail application
and use it to send the message.
To do this it uses a Microsoft technology known as MAPI. Many e-mail
applications - both Microsoft and non-Microsoft ones - support MAPI and
will therefore work with XanaNews.
However, some e-mail programs don't support MAPI, so can't be used by
other programs to send mail on their behalf. For this reason XanaNews can
be configured to use it's own e-mail sending engine instead of the one in
your regular e-mail application.
To configure XanaNews to use it's own e-mail engine to send e-mail replies:
1. Create a new Mail Account
2. Configure a news account (or accounts) to use this mail account when
replying to messages by e-mail

XanaNews > Help > Contents > Working with XanaNews > Creating Mail Accounts
Creating Mail Accounts
To create a new Mail Account, select 'Mail Accounts...' from the Tools
menu and click the Add button.
Fill in the entries in the various sections:
*Basic Account Settings
Fill in the name you'd like to give to this mail account.
*User Preferences
Select the Identity you'd like to assume when using this mail account
*Server Settings
Fill in the Internet address of the SMTP mail server you use, together
with your e-mail user name and password. If you don't know these,
 contact your ISP for details.
*Diallup & Connection
Specify the diallup connection you wish to use, and any additional
parameters. XanaNews supports TLS SSL encryption. If your ISPs mail
server requires it, enter the details here.
*Derived Settings
Mail account Derived Settings override the Default Settings that have
 been set globally in Tools/Options.

XanaNews > Help > Contents > Working with XanaNews > Downloading Messages
Downloading Messages
XanaNews lets you download message headers or full messages, using a
number of criteria. You can download new messages, delete old message
before downloading, download messages posted after a certain date, etc.
You will probably want to adopt different strategies for downloading
messages, depending on what sort of newsgroup you are reading.
In general, when you first subscribe to a newsgroup, select 'Get Last
'n' Messages'. After that, select 'Get All New Messages'.
There are four ways of getting messages in XanaNews:
*Get Messages using the Get Messages Form
*Using Quick Get Messages to get messages for all groups
*Set up Batches to get messages from groups you require.
*Get Messages automatically when you select a group.
1. The Get Messages Form
The primary way to get messages in XanaNews is to select 'Get Messages'
from the Newsgroup menu, or press the 'Get Messages' button on the
toolbar. Either way, the 'Get Messages Form' is displayed.
Notice at the bottom of the form there's a Get Headers Only button. If
this is checked, XanaNews will just download message headers. You can
download the message bodies later, by double-clicking on the message
in the message tree. If this is not checked, XanaNews will download
  full messages.
  *Get All New Messages
Get All New Messages gets all new messages from the newsgroup. Any
messages you've already downloaded will be kept.
This is probably the most usual way of getting messages.
  *Get All Messages
First delete any old messages you've downloaded, then download all
   messages from the newsgroup.
This is useful if you want to 'start again' with a group. Maybe you
haven't visited it for months, so all the message you've already
   downloaded are out of date.
  *Get Only New Messages
First delete any old messages you've downloaded, then download only
   new messages.
This can be particularly effective when downloading from newsgroups
containing pictures. Last time you visited the group you looked
through the pictures and saved any that you wanted to keep. Now you
want to just get the new ones.
  *Get Next 'n' Messages
Keep the messages you've already downloaded, and download the next
   'n' messages too.
This handy if you want to download a full group's worth of messages a
   chunk at a time.
  *Get Last 'n' Messages
First delete any old messages, then download the most recent 'n'
   messages from the newsgroup.
People often use this when they first subscribe to a newsgroup, to
prime it with some messages. Subsequently when reading the group they
   Get All New Messages
*Add Messages from 'n1' to 'n2'
Get messages in the given message number range. Existing messages are
   kept.
Suppose you do 'Get Last 300 messages'. You read them, and think you'd
like to add the previous 300 messages too.
  *Get messages since a date
First delete any existing messages, then download messages since the
given date. This is another useful way of priming a newsgroup.
2. Quick Get Messages.
Use Quick Get Messages to get messages from all the groups you subscribe
to, in all accounts. It uses the default Get Message action for each
group, so you can control whether it downloads full messages, headers
  only, etc.
3  Get Batches of Messages
Set up Batches to get messages for each group in exactly the way you
want. Most experienced XanaNews users eventually setup batches and use
them as their primary method for getting messages.
See the separate section on Batches for more details
4  Download messages automatically when you select a group
You can configure XanaNews to automatically download messages - either
each time you select a group, or just the first time per session you
select a group. When it downloads the messages, XanaNews uses the
default Get Message action for each group, so you can control whether
it downloads full messages, headers only, etc.

XanaNews > Help > Contents > Working with XanaNews > Find Message on
Internet
Find Message on Internet
You can use an Internet search engine to look up messages on the internet
by their message Id. Select 'Find Message on Internet' in the search menu
or message pane popup menu.
By default, XanaNews uses the Google Groups search engine. You can
configure it to use another search engine in the Program Settings options
When you select 'Find Message on Internet', XanaNews first checks to see
if a message Id is highlighted on the message pane. If it is, XanaNews
searches for this message. if there is no highlighted message id,
XanaNews searches for the currently selected message.
If you hold down the Ctrl key when selecting 'Find Message on Internet',
a form is displayed where you can manually enter the message Id to search
for.

XanaNews > Help > Contents > Working with XanaNews > Archived Messages
Archived Messages
You can create Archived Message folders to store large numbers of old
messages, or as a place to hold messages of particular interest.
Once you've created an archived message folder, you can move messages
into it in several ways.
Automatically Move Messages to Folders when Purging
Deleted messages can be automatically moved to an archived message
folder when the group is Purged, or when messages are deleted during
messagebase management. To achieve this, set up a link to an archived
message folder in User Preferences either globally, per account, or per
group.
Move Messages by Dragging
You can drag single or multiply selected messages from the message tree
to an archived message folder. The message(s) will be removed from their
position in the subscribed group and inserted into the archived message
folder.
Copy Messages by Dragging
You can copy single or multiply selected messages from the message tree
into an archived message folder. Hold down the Ctrl key while dragging.
The message(s) will be copied to the archived message folder.
You can move messages from folders back to the message base using the
archived message folder's right-click popup menu
