It took me three months to explain to him what apparent velocity was in astrophysics.
It's actually very simple; it's a kind of Doppler effect. When a body approaches you very quickly, you have the impression of a greater speed, and vice versa if the body moves away. Apparent velocity is the speed measured from our perspective on Earth, which can be influenced by geometry, relativity, and other optical or physical effects.
Here, Vapp = v/(1 + cosµ.v/c)
It took him three months to understand.
