 They ride through on their aetheric mount.
There are masses out there in space, Earth is just one of them. Big ones, say a cluster of galaxies, a large star, ect... A single photon riding the rails on its field line, can twist and turn and maybe come out on the "other side" depending on its line's specific properties. Some photons can angle in and start to orbit a black hole for a while, and/or eventually crash into its even horizon. Fair enough? Some photons might orbit for a while then get ejected, not doomed... :^)
